Obscenely rich?

with 2 comments

My friend Karthick has a rant on the new Ambani residence here. which includes a rather detailed description of the new behemoth that is going to rise in the heart of Mumbai city. Some of the comments from the link are pretty hostile towards this great “waste of money”. It is interesting to note that the comments are from those with access to the internet are willing to spend time commenting rediff (aka the middle class for sure). But is the middle class really free of all guilt?

How is Ambani spending money on his house really different from us buying bottled water instead of drinking from a tap? Or us changing mobile phones every two years just so that we can have the latest model in the market? Is the lavish spending on weddings and birthdays which is customary nowadays really necessary? I think it is fair to say that the vast majority of the people in the world have someone who is richer than them and someone who is poorer and we tend to look at those richer than us in a very critical light, simply waiting for the opportunity to point at them and say “bl***y show offs why don’t they find better use for their money”. In the meanwhile we forget that there are people who are watching us with the same questions running through their minds…

The Ambanis have made their money thanks to their capabilities and in my opinion, there is nothing that stops them from spending it as they like. The only time the rest of the world can ask them to stop spending on luxuries is when we do so ourselves. As Christ is supposed to have said…”let those who have not sinned cast the first stone”, let those who have shunned the luxuries from wealth be the only ones to criticise the Ambani residence.

Having said that, I have to make clear my unreserved admiration for people like Narayan Murthy, Warren Buffet and Muhammad Yunus, people who have either made a lot of money or are talented enough to make money if they wanted to, but still live a simple, down to earth existence with a heavy commitment to bettering the world. It is a rare combination of ability, humility and enlightenment which we would do good to have more of.

  1. Hmm, my point was you shouldn’t lavishly waste so much money and then call yourself a humanitarian. The only thing human about that is that you are more material.

Who has sex where and with whom for how much is none of the other guy’s business, it’s not his money. But when you use it to show off (I don’t personally see any utility in that house man.. do you?) then I would consider he use it more wisely.

Does his wife need a jet to add to the pollution ? And not to mention delay traffic on the runway so that he can party with SRK and fly around people? I don’t think so when you are representative of India’s forward thinkers.
